A distinctively versatile stylist, Barry has played guitar professionally since the age of 16. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Mississippi, he relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, where he spent the next few years performing live and in the studio with numerous artists—most notably rockabilly legend Laurence Beall and seminal Oxford, Mississippi jam band Beanland. After his stint in Nashville, Po returned to school at the University of Southern Mississippi, where he studied classical guitar with John DeChiaro and Jazz improvisation with Larry Panella and Raoul Jerome. Po kept his live playing active during this time, performing in various area blues and jazz combos, served as a pit guitarist for numerous musical theater productions and as a backing musician for several performing artists, including rock ’n’ roll legend Bobby Rydell and jazz icon Ira Sullivan. Following his work at USM, Po continued to study classical guitar under Richard Provost of the Hartt School of Music in Hartford, Connecticut. The 21st century brought Po to Knoxville, where he completed a master’s degree in jazz guitar; there he studied with guitarist Mark Boling and Grammy-nominated jazz pianist Donald Brown. Currently Po heads up the guitar department at East Tennessee State University and plays jazz, rock, and musical theater around the region, backing artists as diverse as Americana songwriter Brendon James Wright, poet/songwriter R.B. Morris, and jazz legend Wallace Roney. Po lives in Knoxville with his wife and two children.
